Ingredients

2 pounds lean ground pork

1 cup breadcrumbs

1 ½ teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon ground pepper

½ teaspoon allspice

1 small sweet yellow onion, minced

2 large eggs

1 stick unsalted butter

Vegetable oil for frying

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth

½ cup heavy cream

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, stir together the pork, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, allspice, onion and eggs until blended. For into 1 inch balls and place on a platter or baking sheet.
  2. In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, melt half the butter with enough vegetable oil to create ½ inch depth in the pan. When the oil is hot add the meatballs a few at a time, do not over crowd them. Brown evenly on all sides until cooked through, about 7 to 8 minutes total. Using a slotted spoon, remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  3. Pour off the fat from the skillet and melt the remaining butter. Add the flour and whisk until white bubbles form. Cook, whisking constantly, 2 to 3 minutes longer. Gradually add the broth and bring to a boil. Add more salt and pepper if needed.
  4. Lower the heat to a simmer. Stir in the cream. Add the meatballs and heat through.  Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
