Ingredients
2 pounds lean ground pork
1 cup breadcrumbs
1 ½ teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon ground pepper
½ teaspoon allspice
1 small sweet yellow onion, minced
2 large eggs
1 stick unsalted butter
Vegetable oil for frying
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
½ cup heavy cream
Directions
- In a large bowl, stir together the pork, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, allspice, onion and eggs until blended. For into 1 inch balls and place on a platter or baking sheet.
- In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, melt half the butter with enough vegetable oil to create ½ inch depth in the pan. When the oil is hot add the meatballs a few at a time, do not over crowd them. Brown evenly on all sides until cooked through, about 7 to 8 minutes total. Using a slotted spoon, remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Pour off the fat from the skillet and melt the remaining butter. Add the flour and whisk until white bubbles form. Cook, whisking constantly, 2 to 3 minutes longer. Gradually add the broth and bring to a boil. Add more salt and pepper if needed.
- Lower the heat to a simmer. Stir in the cream. Add the meatballs and heat through. Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
